AMSA Volunteers Return to Project Food: Another Day of Service in Downtown Riverside
On October 30th, AMSA members got together for another Project Food event in downtown Riverside, stepping away from the usual routine of classes and exams to spend a day giving back. Working with Project Food has become one of our favorite ways to support Riverside’s homeless community, and this time was no different. We spent the day serving food, handing out clothing, and, most importantly, connecting with people who often get overlooked.
The day started early in the kitchen, with a group of us cooking up a warm meal to share. It felt good to be working together, knowing that every dish we prepared was going to someone who really needed it. When we finally started serving, each interaction felt meaningful—it was a chance to show a little kindness and let people know they matter. The smiles and “thank yous” we got in return were honestly the best part of the day.
But food wasn’t the only thing we brought this time. In the weeks leading up to the event, AMSA organized a clothing drive, and the response from students and faculty was amazing. We collected jackets, socks, blankets, and all kinds of essentials. Handing out these items was a reminder of just how tough the winter can be for people without a stable place to stay. Seeing someone light up when they got a new jacket or a pair of socks made all the planning and organizing worth it.
Volunteering with Project Food has shown us that small actions really do add up. We’ve started to recognize some of the same faces at these events, and it feels like we’re building a sense of community and trust with each one. We’re grateful to everyone who donated and volunteered alongside us—our little AMSA family wouldn’t be able to do this without you.
We’re already looking forward to the next event and finding more ways to support our neighbors in need. Until then, we’re holding onto the memories and the lessons learned from another day of service. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!
