At our latest general meeting, we had the incredible opportunity to hear from Dr. Cydney Osano, who shared valuable insight on what it takes to stand out as a medical school applicant. With her experience in medicine and admissions, Dr. Osano broke down the key elements that can make or break your application—and how to start preparing early.

She emphasized that while strong grades and MCAT scores are important, they’re only part of the story. Medical schools are looking for well-rounded individuals who show genuine passion, resilience, and a commitment to service. Dr. Osano encouraged students to find what motivates them personally and to build experiences around those interests—whether that’s through clinical work, research, volunteering, or leadership roles.

One of the biggest takeaways? Authenticity matters. Don’t just do activities because you think they’ll “look good.” Do what you love and reflect on those experiences deeply—that’s what will help your personal statement, secondaries, and interviews shine.

She also gave practical tips on letters of recommendation, choosing the right schools, and avoiding burnout during the application cycle. Her advice was honest, encouraging, and packed with wisdom that many of us will carry through the rest of our premed journey.

Huge thank you to Dr. Osano for taking the time to speak with us and helping us all feel a little more confident in our paths to med school!
